Ultramarine: construction and behavior
Natural ultramarine was historically made from the mineral lazurite in lapis lazuli and was one of the most expensive blue pigments in European painting. Synthetic ultramarine was developed in the nineteenth century and made the intense blue far more widely available.
The pigment is a sulfur-containing sodium aluminosilicate. It has strong color but relatively low tinting strength compared with some modern blues. Acids can damage ultramarine and release sulfurous compounds.
