In line engraving, the artist pushes a burin through a polished metal plate, usually copper. The burin has a sharpened metal shaft mounted in a rounded handle. As it moves forward, it cuts a V-shaped groove and lifts a narrow curl of copper. The engraver can vary pressure to make a line gradually widen or taper. Because the tool is pushed rather than drawn like a pen, tight curves require controlled rotation of the plate and hand.
This physical action produces the characteristic engraved line. Parallel hatching can model gradual shadow, while cross-hatching increases darkness by overlaying line systems at different angles. Short tapered strokes can describe skin, hair, cloth and reflective surfaces. The plate must be planned carefully because every cut becomes part of the printing matrix.
Why the ink prints from below the surface
Engraving is an intaglio process. Ink is forced into the recessed grooves cut below the plate surface. The top of the plate is wiped so that most of the printable ink remains in those incisions. Dampened paper is placed over the plate, and the plate and paper pass through a press under high pressure. The softened paper is pushed into the grooves and lifts the ink out.
An intaglio print can often show a plate mark, a shallow embossed rectangle created where the edges of the metal plate press into the damp paper. Fine lines depend on careful inking and wiping. Too much surface ink muddies the image; too much wiping can reduce delicate passages. Repeated printing also wears the copper plate gradually, so very large editions can lose some sharpness.
Dürer and the technical range of engraving
Albrecht Dürer pushed line engraving to extraordinary technical complexity in works such as Knight, Death and the Devil (1513) and Melencolia I (1514). In these prints, dense networks of lines create metallic surfaces, skin, fur, architecture, atmospheric depth and strong tonal contrast without continuous-tone pigment. The images demonstrate how direction and spacing can make engraved line behave almost like modeled light.
Martin Schongauer, active in the later fifteenth century, was another major engraver whose prints circulated widely. Marcantonio Raimondi became important in the early sixteenth century for reproductive engravings after designs associated with Raphael and other artists. His career illustrates how engraving could disseminate compositions beyond the place where an original drawing, painting or fresco existed.
Prints as portable visual information
The Renaissance expansion of print culture changed how images moved. An engraved sheet was cheaper, lighter and easier to transport than a panel painting or sculpture. Prints could circulate devotional images, portraits, ornament, antiquities, architectural ideas and compositions by well-known artists. Workshops and collectors could study images made in distant cities without seeing the original object.
This circulation also complicated authorship. One person might invent a composition, another engrave it, a publisher issue the plate, and later printers make additional impressions. Inscriptions on prints can record these different roles. Understanding those roles is important because a Renaissance engraving may be an original invention by the engraver, a translation of another artist's design, or part of a commercial publishing operation.
