Commission, architects and function

Construction began in 447 BCE as part of the rebuilding of the Athenian Acropolis after the Persian Wars.

Ancient sources associate the architects Iktinos and Kallikrates with the building, while Phidias supervised or shaped major aspects of the sculptural program and created the colossal chryselephantine statue of Athena Parthenos that stood inside. The temple was dedicated to Athena and also functioned within the political and religious landscape of Athenian power. Its modern status as a universal symbol of 'classical architecture' can obscure that specific civic context.

Doric structure with Ionic elements

The exterior is fundamentally Doric: fluted columns without bases support capitals, an architrave and a frieze divided into triglyphs and metopes. The peristyle has eight columns on the short ends and seventeen on the long sides, an unusually broad arrangement compared with many earlier Doric temples. Inside the outer colonnade, however, an Ionic frieze ran continuously around the upper wall of the cella. The building therefore does not fit a simplistic rule that Greek temples belong wholly to one order.

Optical refinements

The Parthenon is famous for subtle departures from strict straightness. The stylobate rises slightly toward the center, columns have entasis rather than perfectly straight shafts, corner columns are treated differently from interior ones, and vertical elements incline subtly inward. These adjustments are small enough that they are easy to miss in photographs. Scholars have debated whether they were intended primarily to correct optical effects, animate the building visually, improve construction, or combine several purposes. What is certain is that the design was not generated from a simple rectilinear grid.

Sculpture and architecture

The sculptural program occupied several architectural zones. Metopes on the Doric frieze carried high-relief mythological combats. The pediments contained large freestanding groups connected with Athena, while the Ionic frieze represented a long procession usually interpreted in relation to the Panathenaic festival. Sculpture was designed for specific heights, light conditions and viewing distances. Much of it is now dispersed, especially between Athens and the British Museum, making modern museum viewing very different from the original architectural experience.

Later history and conservation

The Parthenon was converted successively into a Christian church and an Ottoman mosque. In 1687, during a Venetian attack on Ottoman-held Athens, stored gunpowder exploded inside the building and caused catastrophic damage. In the early nineteenth century, Lord Elgin’s agents removed a large group of sculptures, creating the continuing dispute over the Parthenon marbles. Modern conservation also has to address earlier iron clamps, pollution and weathering. The monument visible today is therefore both a fifth-century temple and the result of more than two millennia of reuse, damage, removal and restoration.
