Lithography

Lithography made it possible to draw directly on a flat printing surface with crayon-like materials. Unlike relief and intaglio, the image and nonimage areas remain essentially on the same plane.

Senefelder’s invention

Alois Senefelder developed lithography in Bavaria around 1796 while seeking an economical way to reproduce writing and theatrical material.

The process used fine-grained limestone and the chemical incompatibility of greasy drawing material and water. Because the artist could draw on the stone rather than cut a block or engrave metal, lithography offered a more direct graphic language. Senefelder published descriptions of the process and helped establish workshops that spread the technique internationally.

Planographic printing

Lithography is called planographic because the printing surface is not carved into high and low areas like relief or intaglio. The artist draws with a greasy crayon or ink on prepared stone. After chemical processing by trained printers, the stone is dampened so nonimage areas hold water while the greasy image accepts oily printing ink. Paper is pressed against the surface to transfer the image. Historical processing chemistry should be handled in a properly equipped print shop rather than reconstructed casually from old manuals.

Drawing quality

Lithographic crayons can create broad velvety tone, fine line and textures close to chalk drawing. Because limestone is heavy and can be resurfaced, workshops became important technical partners. Artists could also use transfer papers or later metal plates to avoid drawing directly on stone. The process was well suited to quick reproductive work, sheet music, maps and illustration as well as original fine-art prints.
