Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452 near Vinci in Tuscany and trained in Florence in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio. Verrocchio's workshop handled painting, sculpture and other forms of design, so Leonardo's early environment exposed him to multiple materials and technical problems rather than painting alone. He later worked in Milan for Ludovico Sforza, returned to Florence, worked again in Milan and Rome, and spent his final years in France under the patronage of Francis I.
His career is unusually important for the surviving notebooks, which contain studies of anatomy, water, optics, mechanics, fortification, flight, geometry and many other subjects. The notebooks are not a single organized treatise. They are working documents in which observation, diagrams, written notes and speculative designs sit beside one another.
Soft transitions instead of hard outlines
Leonardo's painting is closely associated with sfumato, a method of creating very gradual transitions between tones so that edges can appear soft or atmospheric rather than sharply outlined. Drawing as investigation
Leonardo's anatomical drawings were based in part on direct dissection and close observation. He studied muscles, bones, organs and the proportions of the body, often using several views and sectional diagrams on the same sheet. These drawings combine artistic draftsmanship with an effort to explain structure.
The Vitruvian Man connects human proportion with geometric figures, placing the body in a circle and square in response to ideas derived from the ancient Roman writer Vitruvius. It is often reproduced as an icon of the relationship between art and science, but within Leonardo's practice it belongs to a much broader effort to understand natural form through measurement, drawing and comparison.
