Designers use tracking to make a word, line or block of type feel tighter or more open. It should be distinguished from pair-specific kerning. In practical terms, Tracking belongs to the visual-production layer. The common mistake is to use Tracking as if it also meant Kerning. That blurs two separate decisions and usually sends troubleshooting in the wrong direction. A better test is practical: Tracking affects a range of text, so verify that readability does not suffer when the value is pushed too far.

Increasing tracking on a short all-caps label can create a more open rhythm across the entire word. That example is useful because it turns the definition into something you can recognize, test and discuss with other people working on the same project.
